Midwest Rhinoplasty Expert
Is the shape or size of your nose affecting your self-confidence or quality of life? If so, you may be a candidate for one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the world: rhinoplasty.
Rhinoplasty is a challenging and complicated plastic surgery procedure for several reasons:
- The intricate, three-dimensional nature of the nasal anatomy
- Unforeseen events during surgery
- The importance of the nose to the overall symmetry and harmony of the face
Therefore, it is imperative that your rhinoplasty be performed by a surgeon with precise surgical skill and sound aesthetic judgment.
Dr. Ahmed Abdullah is one of Fargo’s foremost authorities on nose reshaping surgery. He has focused his surgical career on facial cosmetic surgery, with a primary emphasis on rhinoplasty. Dr. Abdullah, who is board certified in plastic surgery, has performed more than 6,000 rhinoplasties during his 23-year career, including countless secondary (revision) rhinoplasty procedures. He spends hundreds of hours attending continuing education courses, and stays up-to-date with the latest rhinoplasty technology.
Dr. Abdullah is passionate about improving the look and function of your nose, so you can feel better about your appearance and enjoy greater confidence.
Most people associate the term “rhinoplasty” with the cosmetic aspects of the procedure — for example, improving the size, shape, contour or features of the nose for a more pleasing overall appearance. With rhinoplasty, Dr. Abdullah can correct the following problems:
- Bump on the bridge of the nose
- Oversized or flared nostrils
- Bulbous, drooping or upturned tip
- Crooked, asymmetrical or off-center nose
Rhinoplasty may also be performed for functional reasons. Functional rhinoplasty involves modifying the nose’s structural components (e.g., the cartilage or bone) to treat a breathing obstruction and improve quality of respiration. Learn more about functional rhinoplasty.
(Please note that it is common for Dr. Abdullah to combine cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty into a single operation.)
In cases where previous rhinoplasty failed to produce the desired results or caused a deformity, revision rhinoplasty may become necessary. Revision rhinoplasty may involve making small tweaks or completely rebuilding the nose to improve its appearance.
Revision rhinoplasty is a much more complex procedure than primary rhinoplasty, due to potential scar tissue and lack of cartilage to work with, and therefore requires a surgeon with exceptional skill and vast experience, like Dr. Abdullah. Learn more about revision rhinoplasty.
More about Nose Reshaping
If you are considering nose reshaping surgery, you will need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Abdullah to determine whether you are a suitable rhinoplasty candidate. Learn more about rhinoplasty candidates.
During the consultation, Dr. Abdullah will ask you to explain what you don’t like about your nose as well as your desired results. He will describe the procedure and invite you to ask questions about it. He will also perform a physical examination of your nose, noting its unique features, skin quality and thickness, and any structural abnormalities. Dr. Abdullah will also examine your chin and other facial features in relation to your nose, and if he feels it would be helpful, he will recommend chin augmentation or another procedure to ensure optimal facial harmony and symmetry.
Rhinoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under anesthesia. You will be able to leave a few hours after your procedure to recover at home.
Rhinoplasty is performed using one of two approaches: “open” or “closed.” If he takes the open approach, he will make incisions across the strip of skin separating the nostrils (called the columella); with the closed approach, he limits the incisions to the inside of the nostrils. Through the incisions, Dr. Abdullah gently lifts the skin from the underlying nasal structures and makes the necessary modifications. These could include adding or removing cartilage or sculpting the existing cartilage to alter the size or shape of the nose. It could also include refining the tip or nostrils. When he’s finished, he will close the incisions with sutures and bandage the nose.
Rhinoplasty recovery generally takes several weeks and will involve a mild to moderate amount of bruising and swelling. Learn more about rhinoplasty recovery.
