Functional Rhinoplasty

While rhinoplasty is commonly performed to make changes affecting the appearance of the nose, it may also be used to treat structural problems or abnormalities that affect breathing. Known among plastic surgeons as “functional rhinoplasty,” this type of surgery aims to restore normal breathing function through the nose. Midwest plastic surgeon, Ahmed Abdullah, has worked with patients who desire functional improvement exclusively, but it is more common for nose surgery to address both functional and cosmetic issues.

Candidates for Functional Rhinoplasty

You may be a candidate for functional rhinoplasty if you have obstructed nasal breathing function due to a nasal injury, trauma, birth defect or acquired deformity. Symptoms of functional airway obstruction include nasal congestion, dry mouth, mouth breathing and a reduced sense of smell. You may also experience nosebleeds, recurrent sinus infections, sinus pressure headaches or sleep disturbance. If left untreated, these symptoms may lead to more serious health conditions, such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea or hypertension.

If you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, Dr. Abdullah encourages you to schedule an informational consultation with him. During this meeting, Dr. Abdullah will perform a physical evaluation of your nose and ask you questions about your nasal breathing abilities. He will also inquire about your health history and whether you’ve had any previous nose surgeries. Together, you will establish the goal of surgery and Dr. Abdullah will draft a treatment plan based on your discussion. He will also explain the procedure in detail and answer any questions you have.

More about the Procedure

Functional rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under anesthesia. You will not feel any pain during surgery and you will be able to go home the day of your procedure.

Rhinoplasty may be performed using the open or closed approach; the former involves an incision on the strip of skin separating the nostrils and the latter involves incisions on the inside of the nose.

Your surgical plan will depend on your anatomical problems and treatment goals.

One of the most common causes of breathing impairment is a deviation of the septum, the bone and cartilage structure that divides the nostrils. Dr. Abdullah performs septoplasty to improve the alignment of the septum so you can breathe easier. This involves trimming, repositioning or replacing cartilage and/or bone.

Recovering from rhinoplasty performed for functional reasons is similar to recovering from cosmetic rhinoplasty. The nose will be sore, swollen and bruised after surgery, but these side effects will gradually subside. It’s important to keep the head elevated and avoid any strenuous activity as your body heals. Dr. Abdullah will follow up with you at several appointments during your recovery to check your healing progress and clear you to return to work, school and everyday activities.
